Kenessa in Vilnius

Kenessa Vilnius

South of Mickevičiaus St., (Liubarto St.6), stands a Kenessa (Karaite sanctuary) built in the Moorish style in 1922. The ornate design style was developed by the Moors.

The name of the scholar and spiritual leader of the Lithuanian Karaimes Seraya Chapchal related with it.

The Karaites are a small religious and national community brought from the Crimea by Vytautas.

Their language is Turkic, and their religion – a branch of Judaism (they adhere to the Old Testament, but do not accept the Talmud).
